London Heathrow Terminal 5

Heathrow Airports new Terminal was officially opened today (Friday 14 March) by the Queen providing much needed extra passenger capacity at Europe’s busiest Airport. The £4.5bn project has not been without its controversy particular concern being raised by environmental groups. BAA has always claimed that there will be no increase in the number of flights. I’ve seen the new building up close during my frequent trips to the airport through my Northampton chauffeur cars and Milton Keynes chauffeur cars business.

The building is quite stunning and is a state of the art facility bringing Heathrow right up to date. Once operational, attention will turn to Terminal 1 which is in much need of modernisation.
Some interesting facts relating to Terminal 5:

Construction began: September 2002
60,000 people have worked a total of 100 million man hours to build
Aircraft stands: 60 by 2010
Car park spaces: 3,800
Self service check-in kiosks: 96
Standard check-in desks: 54
Security lanes: 20
Bags processed per hour: 12,000
Lifts: 192
Escalators: 105
Retail units: 112

The first passengers are due to use the Terminal in a fortnight’s time. Let’s hope that my Northamptonshire airport taxi transfer service and Cambridgeshire airport taxi transfer service can benefit.
